HAWC: Providing Access to Medical and Dental Care for the Low-Income & Uninsured
For 16 years HAWC has provided quality medical and dental care to the medically disenfranchised in northern Nevada. Access to health care in Nevada is a persistent problem. HAWC serves more than 30,000 patients a year with preventative and primary health care. According to the 2010 census, Nevada had the third highest rate of uninsured persons in the country at 21.3%. In 2009, the most recent data at the county level, Washoe County reported 86,085 people without health insurance, up from 80,312 in 2008 ( Small Area Health Insurances Estimates (SAIHE) 2009 & 2008). The need for affordable health care for the under-served is indeed among the greatest in the nation.
WHAT WE DO
-
- HOW WE HELP

- HOW WE HELP
HAWC helps more than 30,000 low-income and uninsured people each year by providing quality medical and dental care. The correlation between poverty and poor health is well-established. Studies done more than a century ago showed a correlation between poor health and socio-economic status and mortality. It is still true today that poverty is deeply linked to how long a person lives and how healthy a person is. In Nevada 18.7% of adults reported being in fair or poor health but the rate jumps to 30% when asking those with incomes below $25,000 per year (CDC 2008 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System).
-
- WHO WE SERVE
HAWC primarily serves low-income families living on less than $29,420 a year for a household of two (equal to 200% of the federal poverty line) in our service area spanning Washoe and Storey counties in northern Nevada. In Washoe and Storey counties the uninsured have very few options for medical and dental care. The vast majority turn to HAWC for care. HAWC At A Glance
