The HAWC Community Health Center is a non-profit tax exempt organization based in Reno, Nevada.  The Washoe County Medical Society developed it to treat the working uninsured of Northern Nevada.  We opened on May 15, 1995, and are providing over 5000 patient visits per month.

History of Health Access Washoe County

Medical Clinic

In the early 1990's the Washoe County Medical Society had the vision of providing medical care to Northern Nevadan's who did not have access to medical care. They opened the first medical clinic, HAWC Community Health Center (Health Access Washoe County) based on a sliding fee scale. HAWC targets a large group of people consisting of the working uninsured, the uninsured and those who cannot afford the costly visit to a private physician.

HAWC opened it's doors in 1995 and has been providing health care resources ever since.  We provide many different programs for the community.  The diabetes collaborative program, Chronic Disease Management, Women's Health Connection, Susan G. Komen, Vaccine for Children, a HAWC pharmacy, Pfizer "Share the Care" program, Radiology, Children's Mental Health and access to Quest Laboratory within the clinic.  Each of these programs is designed to care for the patient in a specialized manner.

HAWC provides patient services to assist each family who is in need with a sliding fee scale payment plan.

Dental Clinic

Over the last ten years as our community grew so did we.  In 1998 We opened our first Dental Clinic.  We currently provide preventive, restorative and educational dental services consistent with the Nevada State Board of Dental Examiners regulations.  HAWC's dental services include cleanings, sealants, x-rays, restorative dentistry endontic treatments, extractions among others and work is done after a treatment plan has been formed by the team. Our dental clinics have 4 full-time dentists, 8 full-time dental assistants, two full-time hygienists and a full-time project coordinator.

HAWC Dental South

In 2003 an opportunity presented itself to expand HAWC's dental services to a satellite facility in the south part of Reno.  Not only does it receive the current heavy volume of dental patients we see at the Wells location, but we are able to provide yet another easily accessible location to our patients.

Outreach Medical Clinic

In 1998 the HAWC Community Health Center working in partnership with the Washoe County Health Department and ReStart secured a federal "Healthcare for the Homeless" grant.  The goal was to take these funds to open a satellite operation specifically focused on providing healthcare for the homeless.  HAWC Outreach Medical Clinic's goal is to provide health and dental care to homeless individuals and families in Washoe County.  We have set high standards for providing our patients with quality, comprehensive primary and preventive care.

HAWC's total patient visits have grown every year beginning with 6600 visits in 1995 climbing to over 60,000 visits in 2005 due to the great need in our community for health care!  The HAWC patient varies, the highest number of visitors being 80% women and children and 40% to minorities. Only 10% are private insurance or Medicare users, 33% are Medicaid users and 57% are UNINSURED using the sliding fee scale.  1% is above 200% of poverty lever, 22% is below poverty level and 31% is below 100% poverty level.
