In July 2001, the Surgeon General issued a report that, "One in ten children suffers from mental illnesses severe enough to impair development."  In 2002, HAWC received funding to initiate Children's Mental Health Services.  This program allows children and families to receive low-cost mental health services during their primary care visit with a HAWC physician.  With this program, HAWC's pediatric patients are referred immediately to an on-site Pediatric Mental Health Specialist (PMHS) for evaluation and treatment needs.  In 2003, HAWC stands as one of only nine community health centers in the nation selected to provide these services.  These children's mental health services will generate greater school retention, decrease contact with the juvenile justice system, increase stability of living arrangements, improve educational, emotional, and behavioral development for underserved children, and reduce the cost of primary health care.

bulletWho Qualifies: HAWC patients ages 5-18 who have behavior or emotional problems.  We will accept Medicaid patients and work with the uninsured on a sliding fee scale.

 

bulletWhat services are offered: Consultation at your appointment, information and referral, brief therapy with children and families, and support groups.

 

bulletWhere: On-site at HAWC Community Health Center during regular clinic hours.
