Welcome To Our Patients
Our goal is to provide comprehensive primary and preventive health care to the medically underserved residents in Washoe County.  The following list of frequently asked questions are helpful especially to our new patients.
bullet

What does your visit include?
The charge for your visit includes the professional fee for our providers, our overhead, and most of the supplies for that visit.  If you cannot afford immunizations for a child, please let us know so we can arrange free shots.

bullet

What is not included?
Not included in the charge are additional prescription medications, and the charges others will bill for laboratory tests, radiological tests, and fees from other specialists and dentists.

bullet

Who is eligible?
While we treat all regardless of their ability to pay, and services are provided on a sliding fee scale to the working uninsured, we also welcome those on Medicaid, Medicare or private insurance.  The Washoe Medical Clinic is available for unemployed people without insurance, and the Washoe Pregnancy Center is available for uninsured pregnant women.  St. Mary's also has free clinics specializing in family medicine for women and children.  If you would like more information on these services please ask the receptionist.

bullet

What is your responsibility?
First and foremost, it is your duty to take responsibility for the consequences of your own lifestyle choices and your own personal health.  Second, our relationship is a partnership, therefore, your full cooperation with your health care team is essential and appreciated.

bullet

Is HAWC a free clinic?
HAWC is not a free clinic.  Patients without insurance are offered a sliding fee scale and are expected to pay their portion of the bill.  HAWC offers the most flexible payment plans available anywhere, and will work with any patient in need of a friendly repayment schedule.  HAWC plans to serve more than 20,000 patients this year and, like any other business, it is expected to hire and pay for qualified staff, maintain a clean professional clinical environment, and cover the general cost of doing business.

bullet

What is our billing policy?

bullet

For our insured patients, we are happy to bill your insurance carrier, however, you are responsible for any co-payments and deductibles.   If for any reason your insurance carrier denies us payment, you remain responsible for charges.

bullet

bullet

For our Medicaid and Medicare patients, again, we are happy to bill the appropriate agency, however, you are responsible for any charges not allowed due to ineligibility.  If you are deemed ineligible, we will be happy to switch you to a sliding fee.

bullet

bullet

For our Sliding Fee Patients, unless you specifically request a customized repayment plan, you remain responsible for your portion of the bill.  In addition, from time to time we may require additional information to verify or update your eligibility and billing address.

What is our collection policy?
When it is determined that a responsible party will not pay, or will not make arrangements to pay over a negotiated time period, HAWC will deem these to be "bad debts" and refer them to a Collection Agency.  If the responsible party truly can not pay, that person must make an appointment with the business office to apply in person for free care.  HAWC will accept volunteer labor in lieu of payment, however, this must be approved in writing in advance.

     Good News!

While we accept most insurance plans, we are also the only clinic in the area providing primary health care on a sliding fee scale.   That is to say, people can pay based on their ability to pay.  Our minimum charge for an office visit is about one-quarter of the customary charge, and we offer a discount pharmacy service for the working uninsured.  Our mission is to provide comprehensive primary, preventive, and referral health care services to people who do not currently have access to the health care system.
