HAWC receives a subgrant to provide assistance to our patients and has on staff a Patient Navigator to help in the process.  Patients can be qualified and sign up for the WHC program during their visit to HAWC as well as receiving the following covered services: PAP Smears, pelvic exams, and clinical breast exams.

More about the  Women's Health Connection:
The HAWC Community Health Center is a proud partner of Nevada State Health Division's Women's Health Connection Program.  The Women's Health Connection is a breast and cervical cancer early detection program available to eligible Nevada women at no cost.  In addition the clinic is a provider of services for eligible women in northern Nevada.  Funding for the program is made possible by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention..

Why is cancer screening so important?
The risk for breast and cervical cancer increases as you get older, but it is much easier to cure when detected early.  That is why having a screening mammogram and Pap test every year is an important part of keeping yourself well and feeling more secure about your health.

What does it include?

bulletFree clinical breast exam
bulletFree Pap test and pelvic exam
bulletFree breast self exam instruction
bulletFree additional breast and cervical cancer diagnostic tests when indicated
bulletFree screening mammogram (age 50-64)

EARLY DETECTION IS YOUR BEST PROTECTION!!!!

The Older you get, the MORE you need a mammogram.

Early Detection

What is a mammogram?
A mammogram is a low-dose, x-ray picture of the breast.  It is used for screening or diagnosis of breast cancer.  Mammography has the ability to detect breast cancer two years before it reaches a size that can be felt in the breast.

What is a Pap test?
A Pap test is a collection of cells taken by swabbing the cervix.  The sample of cells is tested at a laboratory for cancer cells or changes in cells that could lead to cancer.  Early detection can mean more effective treatment or the treatment may even prevent cancer.

WHC Presumptive Eligibility Screening Process

Front desk personnel identify potential WHC clients and provide them with a yellow eligibility screening form.  (Uninsured and underinsured Nevada women age 40 & older who meet the income guidelines.)

This form must be completed in the waiting area, prior to the applicant being seen.  (It does take a little more time, but it will prevent confusion & problems later in the process.  We can't do it without you and your help is greatly appreciated!)

When the applicant returns the form, the front desk personnel must ensure the applicant has signed and dated where indicated.  (This makes the form a valid legal document) . Front desk personnel should then compare the applicants stated income level with the WHC income level guidelines and give the applicant a "YES" or "NO" decision related to eligibility.  (This prevents the applicant from incurring unexpected charges or falsely believing they have qualified.)

If the patient has any questions or concerns, please call the Patient Navigator at (775) 329-6300 ext. 133.
